In rare alliance, Samsung to build iPhone chips at US fab - The Korea Herald

In a statement announcing its increased investment in the US, Apple said, 'At Samsung's factory in Austin, Texas, we are developing chip manufacturing technology using revolutionary new techniques never before used anywhere in the world. As the first to introduce this technology in the US, the facility will supply chips that optimize the power efficiency and performance of Apple products, including iPhones, shipped around the world.'

Although the specific 'what kind of chip' is not mentioned, the industry believes that the new technology refers to 'three-stage additive hybrid bonding' and that the 'chip' refers to a CMOS image sensor.

Lee Jeong-hwan, a professor of semiconductor science at Sangmyung University in South Korea, said, 'Samsung appears to have struck a deal with Apple due to the imminent imposition of tariffs on foreign-made chips.' He added that the reason Sony was not chosen was because 'Apple prioritized Samsung because it does not have a factory in the United States.'

Sony responded to the Financial Times by saying, 'We believe we are at the forefront of providing sensor technology to our customers, and we are committed to continuing to drive technological advancements through further increases in sensor size and density.'

President Trump has decided to impose a 100% tariff on imported semiconductors, but Samsung and SK Hynix are exempt from the tariffs.
