In mid-July 2025, Steam removed some of the adult games that had been available on its platform. This was believed to be a response to criticism from the anti-pornography group Collective Shout against payment platforms such as Visa, PayPal, and Mastercard, alleging that 'extreme adult games are being distributed on Steam and itch.io.' However, Steam did not clearly state what types of adult games were subject to the restrictions, leading to frustration among gamers who feared that if the payment platforms said no, all content would become unavailable.

Following Steam's lead, itch.io also announced that it would be strengthening its restrictions on adult content. itch.io explained, 'Payment processing capabilities are essential to all creators who use our platform, so in order to continue our business and provide a marketplace for all developers, we must prioritize our relationships with our payment partners and take swift steps to ensure compliance,' revealing that the adult content restrictions were due to pressure from payment processors.

Gamers are complaining that the current situation, where streaming content is being forced to be removed due to pressure from payment platforms that do not operate the platforms, is tantamount to payment platforms censoring streaming content. Some gamers have also made phone calls and emails to protest against payment platforms that are allegedly pressuring Steam and itch.io.

GOG.com stated, 'If a game is legal and made responsibly, players should be able to enjoy it not only today but decades from now.' It also pointed out that the current situation where Steam and itch.io are unable to properly distribute adult content due to pressure from payment platforms is problematic.

They have launched a campaign called 'FreedomToBuy.games' to raise awareness of censorship in the gaming industry. 'Freedom To Buy' is offering 13 games for free for 48 hours only. The games being offered are 'POSTAL 2,' 'Agony + Agony UNRATED,' 'Leap of Love,' 'Being a DIK - Season 1,' 'Leap of Faith,' 'House Party,' 'HuniePop,' 'Lust Theory,' 'Treasure of Nadia,' 'Summer's Gone - Season 1,' 'Fetish Locator Week One,' 'Sapphire Safari,' and 'Helping the Hotties.'

GOG.com states, 'If a game is legal, it should be free to buy.' 'Thanks to the dedicated work of developers and publishers, we've launched FreedomToBuy.games.' 'To raise awareness of censorship in games, we're making 13 games available for free for 48 hours as part of our commitment to creative freedom and protection.' 'We believe that if a game is legal and made responsibly, players should be able to enjoy it today and decades to come. Our argument is that if a game is removed from the list today because it's offensive, it will be exponentially more difficult to reinstate it tomorrow.'
