Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg says the development of superintelligence is now imminent, aiming to equip smart glasses with 'personalized ASI'

Just before Meta's second-quarter (April-June) 2025 financial results announcement, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, shared his vision for the future of AI, titled 'Personal Superintelligence.' Zuckerberg predicted that smart glasses equipped with artificial superintelligence (ASI), which far surpasses human intelligence, and optimized for individuals, will become a mainstream device.

ASI, an AI with intelligence far beyond that of humans, is a system capable of independently making decisions while adapting to various tasks. Along with artificial general intelligence (AGI), it is being developed by various companies, including Meta, Google, and OpenAI. Meta, in particular, has recruited a large number of talent from AI companies to establish the 'Superintelligence Lab' to research AGI and ASI.

'In recent months, we have begun to see AI systems improving themselves. Progress has been slow so far, but it is undeniable,' Zuckerberg said. 'The development of superintelligence is now on the horizon. It is clear that in the coming years, AI will improve all existing systems and enable us to create and discover new things that we cannot imagine today.'
Zuckerberg added, 'I'm very optimistic that superintelligence will help accelerate the pace of human progress. But even more importantly, superintelligence has the potential to usher in a new era of personal empowerment, where people have greater agency to shape the world in the ways they want to see it better.' He expressed his outlook that having a 'personal superintelligence' for everyone would have an even more meaningful impact on our lives.
Meta's vision is to 'bring personal superintelligence to everyone,' and it believes that 'we should put this power in people's hands so they can direct it toward the things they value in their lives.' Zuckerberg argues that 'the superintelligence should be centrally managed to automate all valuable tasks, and humanity would live off its output.'
The Verge, an IT news site, mentions that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also said in a 2024 speech at Harvard University that 'AI could replace many jobs in society and ultimately lead to a kind of universal basic income.'
'Personal devices like glasses that see what we see, hear what we hear, and understand our context by interacting with us throughout the day will become our primary computing devices,' Zuckerberg said, predicting a future in which wearable devices like smart glasses will be equipped with ASI and optimized for individuals.

'We believe the benefits of superintelligence should be shared with the world as widely as possible. That said, superintelligence will raise unprecedented security concerns. We will need to be rigorous in mitigating these risks and carefully choose what we open source. But we also believe that to build a free society, we must aim to empower people wherever possible,' Zuckerberg wrote.
Finally, Zuckerberg said, 'The rest of the 2020s will be a defining period in determining the path this technology will take and whether superintelligence will become a tool for individual empowerment or a force focused on replacing widespread segments of society. Meta strongly believes in building a personal superintelligence that empowers everyone.'
