YouTube introduces machine learning technology to detect minors regardless of their registered profile

YouTube has long been working to provide a safe, age-appropriate experience, launching

YouTube Kids in 2015 and providing parent-managed accounts for children in 2021. Going even further, the company has announced plans to soon introduce age estimation technology using machine learning.

YouTube says the age estimation technology is being introduced to provide 'the best age-appropriate experience and protections,' and will ensure minors are treated as minors and adults as adults.

Until now, YouTube Kids has had three settings: for toddlers, for younger elementary school students, and for older elementary school students, with parent-managed accounts available for older age groups. However, the new technology uses machine learning to estimate the user's age.

Age estimation uses the types of videos a user searches for, the categories of videos they watch, and the length of time their account has been active, so even if a minor registers an account using a different birthdate and operates the account as an adult, the company says it will be able to provide a product experience and protection that is appropriate for the user's age.

YouTube says the age estimation technology has already been used in 'other markets' and is working well.

The new technology will be introduced to a select number of users in the United States first, with plans to roll it out to other markets in the future.

By the way, 'verifying user age' is one of the challenges faced by each platform and content provider, and Google open-sourced the 'Longfellow' library in July 2025, a 'zero-knowledge proof' technology that can verify user age without disclosing personal information, as a technology that can verify user age while protecting privacy.
