Uber introduces 'Women's Preference' gender matching system that allows female customers to choose female drivers

Uber, a taxi dispatch service, has introduced a feature called ' Women Preference ' that introduces women to female passengers and female drivers who wish to be accompanied by a woman. Female passengers can preferentially select female drivers, and female drivers can preferentially select female passengers.

◆For passengers
If a female passenger is requesting a ride, they will be given the option to select 'female driver.' Selecting this option increases the chances of being matched with a female driver, although this is not guaranteed.

◆For drivers
Female drivers can request to accommodate female passengers simply by selecting the 'female priority' option. The setting can be changed at any time.

Uber explained that 'drivers who register as female or non-binary can set their preference to pick up women.' In addition, they cannot guarantee that all passengers matched using this feature will be women, nor can they guarantee that passengers will appear with an appearance that is perceived as female. 'If you are matched with a user who appears to be male while using this feature, you may refuse to take a ride,' they said.

According to Uber, this feature was originally deployed in Saudi Arabia, where women were first allowed to have driver's licenses in 2018. The response to the introduction was positive, and although it was initially only a feature for drivers, it was now being rolled out to passengers in response to customer requests. This time, the feature was introduced again as it will be introduced for the first time in the United States.

Although the route is predetermined, the ride is half the normal fare. In addition, 'price lock pass' and 'prepaid pass' are also introduced, which allow you to use a specific route at a fixed price.

Uber teams up with Volkswagen to deploy fully electric, self-driving vehicles
Volkswagen's autonomous electric vehicle , the ID. Buzz AD , has been selected to be deployed in the U.S. as a commercial robotaxi for Uber. Former Uber CEO Travis Kalanick is keen to acquire robotaxi company Pony.ai, Uber to provide funding
Travis Kalanick, the founder of Uber who left the company in 2017, is exploring ways to acquire the U.S. division of Chinese self-driving car company Pony.ai, the New York Times reported . Kalanick is working with investors to raise funds for the acquisition, and Uber may also help close the deal. Pony.ai is set to go public in 2024, and had a market capitalization of about $4.5 billion (about 665 billion yen) before the New York Times report was published.

Previously, Uber had been developing its own self-driving car technology, but in 2018, a test vehicle was involved in an accident in Arizona that killed a pedestrian. Kalanick's successor, Dara Khosrowshahi, eventually sold Uber's self-driving division to self-driving truck startup Aurora. Under Khosrowshahi, Uber has adopted a policy of partnering with other companies, using self-driving cars from companies like Waymo.

Kalanick has been increasingly involved in robotics in recent years, running his own ghost kitchen company, CloudKitchens, and, according to TechCrunch, if he were to acquire Pony.ai, it would mark Kalanick's first return to the world of self-driving cars since he was ousted from Uber in 2017.
