Starlink satellite service down worldwide

It was reported worldwide that Starlink , the internet network of SpaceX , an aerospace manufacturer led by Elon Musk, lost connectivity around July 24, 2025. This is almost the first time that Starlink has experienced a global communication outage.

Starlink's internet outage was first confirmed at around 4:00 a.m. on July 25th, Japan time, when users who tried to use the internet were shown an error message saying 'There is no healthy upstream.' About an hour later, Starlink posted on X, 'Starlink is currently experiencing a network outage and is actively working on a solution. We apologize for the inconvenience, and will provide an update as soon as the issue is resolved.'

Musk also said on X, 'Service will be restored shortly. We apologize for the communication outage. SpaceX is working to fix the root cause to prevent this from happening again.'

According to NetBlocks, an internet reporting service, Starlink's internet did not completely stop, but rather suddenly dropped from around 90% to about 16%.

About two hours after Starlink announced the outage, Michael Nichols, Starlink's vice president of engineering, posted, 'Starlink has largely recovered from the network outage. The outage was caused by a failure in a key internal software service that operates our core network. We apologize for the temporary service interruption. We are committed to providing a reliable network and will thoroughly investigate the root cause of this issue and work to prevent it from recurring.'

Starlink is a service that uses satellites to provide internet access, so it can provide the same level of communication in both urban and rural areas with a dedicated receiving antenna. For this reason, it has been installed in Iran , where the internet is often blocked by government censorship, and has been evaluated as having 'changed the battle' by deploying Starlink in Ukraine within a few days of Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, and plays an important role in certain regions and communities.

According to the Ukrainian online media The Kyiv Independent , a Starlink failure caused internet outages across the Ukrainian military front line. Although it was later restored, the internet was down for about 150 minutes, the longest outage since the start of the invasion of Ukraine.

At the time of writing, Nichols had only announced that the issue was due to an 'outage of a major internal software service that runs our core network,' and no details were provided about the cause of the outage.
