Ultra-fast wireless charging standard 'Qi2 25W' finally announced, will it be adopted by major Android smartphones such as the Pixel 10 series in addition to the iPhone?

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), which develops and promotes the international standard for wireless charging, Qi , has announced the Qi2 25W standard, an extension of the Qi2 standard. As the name suggests, Qi2 25W enables wireless charging with a maximum output of 25W, which is expected to significantly improve charging speeds over Qi2's maximum of 15W.

Before Qi2, multiple smartphone manufacturers developed their own proprietary fast-charging protocols, which meant that even when devices supported wireless charging, they lacked interoperability and charging times were inconsistent.
Meanwhile, Qi2, released in November 2023, has succeeded in attracting more consumer interest with its maximum charging output of 15W. Qi2-compatible devices were released during the holiday season at the end of 2023, and within a year, more than 1.5 billion compatible devices were shipped to the market.

The latest version of Qi2, Qi v2.2.1, will be released soon under the name Qi2 25W. The charging output is up to 25W compared to Qi2's maximum of 15W, which is about 70% higher.
With the release of Qi2 25W, not only Apple's iPhone but also major Android smartphones will join the Qi2 ecosystem. According to the WPC, Qi2 25W certification tests were conducted on 14 devices in the third week of July 2025, and full-scale certification tests will be conducted on hundreds of devices waiting to be tested in the future.
'Momentum for the next step in the evolution of the Qi standard is incredible,' said Fadi Mishriki, Chairman of the WPC Board of Directors. 'Qi2 25W delivers approximately 70 percent more charging power than the original Qi2, and we are sure consumers will be pleased with it. The number of devices waiting for Qi2 25W certification is unprecedented, and the quality and breadth of product designs from our member companies is equally impressive.'
'When we introduced Qi2, we promised not only immediate improvements in charging speed and energy efficiency, but also a stepping stone to even faster and more efficient wireless charging in the future, thanks to the benefits of Qi2's magnetic power protocol,' said Paul Strusaker, executive director of the WPC. 'Qi2 25W's incredibly fast and efficient wireless charging will drive widespread adoption of wireless charging and accelerate the adoption of this new standard.'
The most well-known Qi2-compatible wireless charger is Apple's official wireless charger, MagSafe.
It turns out that the iPhone 12 quietly supports Qi2 wireless charging up to 15W in iOS 17.4, enabling high-speed wireless charging even with chargers other than MagSafe-compatible chargers - GIGAZINE

The WPC has not revealed which smartphones will support Qi2 25W. Apple's iPhone 16 series supports charging at up to 15W output with Qi2-compatible wireless chargers, but with MagSafe, it can charge at up to 25W. Since Qi2 is based in part on MagSafe, The Verge points out that it is highly likely that the iPhone 16 series will support Qi2 25W with an update.
At the time of writing, only the HMD Skyline supports Qi2 among Android smartphones. Samsung's flagship smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7, support Qi2 Ready without the built-in magnetic ring of the Qi2 standard. Qi2 Ready supports a maximum Qi2 charging output of 15W, but does not have a built-in magnetic ring used to fix the charging position, so you have to purchase a dedicated magnetic case.
The Verge points out that it is unclear whether Android smartphones will support Qi2 25W rather than magnet-free Qi2 Ready, while Android Authority reports that 'the upcoming Pixel 10 series is very likely to be the first Android smartphone to support Qi2 25W.'
