Google's enhanced Gemini reaches gold medal-winning performance at the Mathematical Olympiad, works in natural language and derives answers in the same time limit as humans

Google announced on July 22, 2025 (Japan time) that it had taken on the International Mathematical Olympiad with an enhanced version of 'Gemini Deep Think' and achieved a gold medal-equivalent score. The AI will be made available to Google AI Ultra subscribers after a testing period by testers.

In the International Mathematical Olympiad, participants are given six difficult problems, and the top 8% of participants are awarded a gold medal. The enhanced Gemini Deep Think succeeded in perfectly solving five out of six problems, earning a total of 35 points and achieving a record equivalent to a gold medal. The problems of the International Mathematical Olympiad and the answers of Gemini are available at the following link.

Google has previously used its own AI to challenge the International Mathematical Olympiad, and in 2024 it successfully achieved a silver medal-equivalent score by combining AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2. However, the 2024 challenge required a process to convert natural language into a domain-specific language that was easy for AI to process, and the calculations took 2-3 days. In this challenge using the enhanced Gemini Deep Think, the team entered natural language and succeeded in achieving a gold medal-equivalent score within the same time limit of 4 hours and 30 minutes as human participants.

The enhanced version of Gemini Deep Think will undergo a period of testing by trusted testers, including mathematicians, before being made available to Google AI Ultra subscribers.
We achieved this year's impressive result using an advanced version of Gemini Deep Think (an enhanced reasoning mode for complex problems). Our model operated end-to-end in natural language, producing rigorous mathematical proofs directly from the official problem descriptions –…

OpenAI also announced a similar result on July 19, 2025, but Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis commented, 'As an aside, we did not announce it on Friday because we followed the request of the International Mathematical Olympiad Committee that 'we do not want to share the results until all AI research results have been verified by independent experts and the human participants have received the praise they deserve.'' He criticized AI research institutes that did not follow the committee's request and released their results early.
Btw as an aside, we didn't announce on Friday because we respected the IMO Board's original request that all AI labs share their results only after the official results had been verified by independent experts & the students had rightly received the acclamation they deserved
