Microsoft quietly ends movie and TV sales and rentals on Xbox and the Microsoft Store



Microsoft has announced that it will no longer be able to purchase entertainment content such as movies and TV shows from its official website, Microsoft.com , the Microsoft Store on Windows, or the Microsoft Store on Xbox. However, content previously purchased will still be available.

On July 18, 2025 local time, Microsoft updated its official Xbox and Microsoft support pages and announced that it would stop selling video content such as movies and TV shows in the Microsoft Store for Windows and Xbox.

The official Xbox support page explains, 'As of July 18, 2025, Microsoft will no longer offer movies and TV shows for purchase or rental. Previously purchased and personal videos will continue to be available to watch in the Movies & TV app .'

On its official support page, Microsoft explained, 'Microsoft will stop allowing you to purchase new entertainment content, like movies and TV shows, on Microsoft.com, Microsoft Store on Windows, and Microsoft Store on Xbox. However, you will still be able to access the content you purchased in the Movies & TV app on your Xbox or Windows device.'

Although sales and rentals of video content will end on the Microsoft Store, video content already purchased on Windows and Xbox will continue to be available for download and playback. However, refunds will not be available and content cannot be transferred to another service.

Apple will stop selling movies and TV shows on the iTunes Store with the release of tvOS 17.2 in the second half of 2023, encouraging people to move to the Apple TV app.
