Seagate's 30TB HDD is finally available for general sale, priced at just under 90,000 yen

Seagate's HDDs, which were sold to some data centers, have now been released to the general market. The '

Exos M ' model is for hyperscale data centers and the ' IronWolf Pro ' model is optimized for NAS.

The new models and prices are as follows:

・ Exos M 28TB: $569.99 (about 85,000 yen)
・Exos M 30TB: $599.99 (about 89,000 yen)
IronWolf Pro 28TB: $569.99
IronWolf Pro 30TB: $599.99

Exos M is designed for customers who need high-capacity, energy-efficient storage for applications such as data placement optimization and real-time edge analytics.

IronWolf Pro is primarily NAS-optimized storage, and Seagate emphasized in the release that it can help on-premise NAS systems power AI workloads.

The 30TB capacity achieved by Seagate was made possible by a technology called '

thermally assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) ,' which Seagate is fully implementing. Unlike the conventional recording method called perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) , HAMR enables high-density data storage by heating the magnetic recording medium to reduce the coercive force.

Seagate has achieved an areal density of 3TB per platter (magnetic disk) using a technology called 'Mozaic 3+' that uses HAMR, and in January 2025 it arranged for 36TB HDDs manufactured with the same technology to some customers, and in June it shipped 40TB HDDs.

Finally, a single HDD with a capacity of 40TB will be shipped from Seagate - GIGAZINE

The 30TB HDD also uses Mosaic 3+, and Seagate says that 'customers looking for the best performance/cost tradeoff for large capacity storage can benefit from the HAMR product roadmap.'

On the Japanese product page, Amazon and others are listed as sales partners, but at the time of writing, Exos M was not available and IronWolf Pro was only available up to 24TB. The IronWolf Pro 24TB was released in March 2024, and the price at the time of release was 82,800 yen including tax.
