A close partnership between the Ministry of Defence, the headquarters of the British Armed Forces, and the British Esports Federation has seen the Royal Navy's flagship, the Prince of Wales, equipped with a full-scale esports facility.

The e-sports equipment to be installed on the Prince of Wales will include 12 high-end gaming PCs, the Alienware Aurora R15 , equipped with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 graphics boards and Intel Core i7 processors. The e-sports equipment will be installed in the carrier's sports facilities, which include a gym, bowling, table tennis, and running machines.

The UK Ministry of Defense recognized e-sports as an official military sport in March 2024, encouraging warship crew and civilians to take part in e-sports. As a result, it seems that warships currently in operation by the Royal Navy have space for home game consoles such as Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. However, the Prince of Wales is the first to introduce a full-fledged gaming PC.
'Having access to the esports suite for crew members on the Prince of Wales is a huge benefit to crew morale. Crew members who use the suite can enjoy their hobbies or discover new ones, while also interacting with people outside of their usual departments,' said Victoria Marley of LET(CIS)Spec.
Chester King, CEO of British Esports, explained: 'We've been working with the Armed Forces since 2019 and as part of a wider partnership with Dell, Intel and Alienware we are now able to provide high specification equipment for the esports facilities at the Prince of Wales.'
In addition, the British Esports Federation wrote, 'We are thrilled to be partnering with the Royal Navy and Ministry of Defence. Gaming is becoming increasingly important to the military as it has many benefits, including developing communication, leadership and strategic skills, and helping personnel bond, relax and stay in a good mental state. We look forward to announcing more exciting partnerships in the near future,' talking about the benefits that esports will bring to the Royal Navy.

Lieutenant Commander Stephen Rennie, chair of the Defence Esports Network, said: 'Esports is rapidly growing into a multi-billion pound industry, influencing entertainment, technology and military training around the world. The UK defence sector must embrace esports as a strategic tool to promote key skills, foster community and attract the next generation of talent that reflects wider society. This esports facility is proof of just that.'
Chief Petty Officer Martin Miller, vice chair of the Royal Navy's Esports Committee, oversaw the program and participated in a solo gaming session of Sid Meier's Civilization VI . Chief Petty Officer Miller said that because online multiplayer is unavailable while the Prince of Wales is at sea, crew leaders are booking the esports facilities for their teams to use around three times a week.
The UK government has also introduced a new recruitment system for the military starting in 2025, allowing gamers to join cyber defence roles.
