The NCA is a major initiative of the United States Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) , established under the Global Change Research Act of 1990. The NCA regularly publishes reports that are thoroughly reviewed by federal agencies, members of the National Academy of Sciences, as well as the public and experts, with the most recent report being published in 2023.
The NCA report was focused on specific regions across the United States, making it a valuable resource for state and local governments and the public to learn what a warming climate will do where they live.
For example, the 2023 NCA report included an interactive atlas that could be zoomed in to the county level in the U.S. According to the report, climate change has a variety of impacts on people's safety, health, and lives in every region of the United States, with minority and Native American communities at disproportionate risk.
However, the websites of the NCA and USGCRP were deleted on June 30 and July 1, 2025, respectively, and the reports are no longer accessible. The US government said the collected data will be stored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as required by law, but did not provide further details. The Associated Press contacted NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which coordinated the data, but did not receive a response.

'It is critical that decision makers across the country understand the science behind the NCA - it is the most trusted, well-vetted source of information on climate in the United States,' said Cathy Jacobs, a climate scientist at the University of Arizona who coordinated the 2014 NCA report. 'If the NCA report is no longer available, this would be a sad day for America. This is evidence that the truth and people's access to information have been compromised, and it could actually increase people's risk of harm from climate-related impacts.'
John Holdren, a Harvard University climate scientist who served as a science adviser to former President Barack Obama, said that after the 2014 NCA report was released, he received reports from various state governors, mayors and other local government officials that the report had helped them decide whether to raise road levels, build seawalls or move hospital generators from underground to rooftops.
'This is a taxpayer-funded government resource that provides information to help prepare for the impacts of climate change,' said Katherine Hayhoe, a climate scientist at Texas Tech University who has served as a volunteer author on several of the NCA reports. 'This information is going to be the primary source of information for cities, states and federal agencies as they prepare for the impacts of climate change.'
Past NCA reports can be found in NOAA's library , but the Trump administration has fired about 400 scientists and experts who worked on the NCA reports, making it unclear whether future reports will be released.
