Review of Buffalo's external high-speed SSD 'SSD-PMS1.0U3-BA' that sticks perfectly to the back of the iPhone

If you take a lot of photos and videos with your smartphone, you may find that your storage capacity is being strained before you know it. Buffalo's external SSD 'SSD-PMS1.0U3-BA' is MagSafe compatible, so you can use it while it is attached to the back of your iPhone, and when you connect the SSD and record in Apple ProRes, the files will be saved to the SSD without any settings.

The outer box of the 'SSD-PMS2.0U3-BA' looks like this, and is colored in a way that is common to Buffalo products. By the way, there are also 500GB model ' SSD-PMS500U3-BA ' and 2TB model ' SSD-PMS2.0U3-BA ' with different capacities.

The slogans include 'Securely attach with MagSafe for professional-style iPhone photography' and 'High-speed transfer to PC/Mac. Streamline your creative work.'

The main body looks like this. It is approximately 64mm x 64mm and 12mm thick.

There is a USB-C port on the side with the red mark, below the 'Buffalo' logo.

The other sides have a simple design with no buttons or cutouts.

On the back was the model name, serial number, and QR code for user registration.

The actual weight is 35g.

Together with the included USB-C cable it weighs 45g.

It fits just right so that the Buffalo logo is visible.

The adhesive is strong enough that you can lift the SSD from the back of the iPhone with one hand without it coming off.

When connected, the indicator next to the USB-C port will light up white and will flash when reading or writing files. When it is lit, it is OK to remove the device.

I connected it to my PC and used the benchmark software '

CrystalDiskMark ' to measure the transfer speed. I ran it three times just to be sure, and the numbers are slightly different, but the sequential read speed was about 1200MB/s, the sequential write speed was about 1140MB/s, the random read speed was about 200MB/s, and the random write speed was about 230MB/s.

With this external SSD connected, start up your iPhone camera and when recording video turn on 'ProRes' at the top. 'USB-C' will appear under the record button and the recorded video will be saved to the external SSD.

A 3-minute ProRes video file is 10GB in size, and a 30-minute file is nearly 100GB in size, so you need to be mindful of the capacity when shooting videos of a certain length, but this external SSD can store the video with ease. It's very helpful because you only have to think about whether you're shooting what you want to shoot when shooting. I tried using it in a room set at around 25 degrees and outdoors where the temperature was over 30 degrees, and although the SSD certainly got hot, the iPhone itself got hotter when I was shooting.

Although the cable is a little stiff, the SSD is basically connected to the back of the iPhone, so unless you're connecting it to a PC, it's not difficult to handle. The cable fits in quite firmly and is very stable, so there's no need to worry about it coming loose while you're using it. During my use, I didn't have any accidents, such as my fingers getting caught and it coming loose while I was using it.
