Gross was born in 1991. At the age of 19, he joined Y Combinator, an entrepreneurial support organization, as the 'youngest founder in history,' and founded Greplin, a search engine that can search across all cloud services. He was selected by Forbes as one of its '30 under 30' technology companies, and was also selected by Business Insider as one of its '25 under 25 in Silicon Valley.'

Greplin was renamed Cue in 2012 and was acquired by Apple in 2013. Gross currently works at Apple as Director of Machine Learning and was named one of Forbes' '30 Under 30 Most Influential People in Tech.'

He then left Apple, went through Y Combinator and founded the startup fund Pioneer.

In the 2020s, he began investing in AI. He was named one of the 'most influential people in the AI world' by TIME. In 2024, he founded SSI with former OpenAI CEO Ilya Satskiver.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, which is focusing on AI, was interested in SSI and considered acquiring it, but gave up due to resistance. However, he still wanted talented people, so he succeeded in recruiting Gross, who was the CEO of SSI.

Following Gross' departure, Satskiver was appointed as the new CEO of SSI. Upon assuming the position of CEO, Satskiver issued the following message to the SSI team and investors:

'As many of you know, Daniel Gross' tenure is coming to an end and he officially retired from the SSI team on June 29th. We thank him for his contributions since the company's inception and wish him the best in his future endeavors.

I am now officially the CEO and Daniel Levy is President. The technical team will continue to report to me. You may have heard rumors of a company trying to acquire SSI, and I am honored that these rumors have come out.

We have the computational power, we have the team, and we know what to do. Together, we will continue to build a safe superintelligence.'
