Bloomberg reported that Apple executives are considering acquiring Perplexity AI to attract talent and to provide a future AI-based search engine. Apple's M&A chief Adrian Pellica is in talks with Eddy Cue, senior vice president of Services, and other top AI decision makers about the acquisition.
The talks are still in the early stages, and Apple has not yet made a specific offer to Perplexity AI, and internal discussions may not result in a formal proposal. However, Bloomberg reports that Apple has met with Perplexity AI multiple times in the past few months.
Apple is also considering an alternative option of partnering with Perplexity AI rather than acquiring the company. In any case, it seems that the plan is to develop an AI search engine based on Perplexity AI's AI technology and integrate it with Apple's voice recognition assistant, Siri.

In May 2025, Cue revealed that Apple was in talks to integrate Perplexity AI with Safari during Google's ongoing search antitrust trial. Cue participated in the trial because Google has been investing huge amounts of money to make Google search the default search engine for Apple's search engine, Safari.

If regulators force Apple to end its partnership with Google, Apple's acquisition of Perplexity AI and its shift to developing an AI search engine may accelerate, and the acquisition of Perplexity AI will also help Apple acquire the talent it needs to catch up with its competitors in the AI field.
Apple is focusing on talent in the AI field, and Bloomberg reports that Apple is competing with Meta for Safe Superintelligence founder Daniel Gross.
