Google launches 'WeatherLab' to use AI to predict and warn of typhoons, hurricanes and cyclones

Google DeepMind and Google Research have announced that they have launched the Weather Lab, a typhoon forecasting platform in collaboration with the US National Hurricane Center.

Typhoons, hurricanes, and cyclones have caused economic losses of about $1.4 trillion over the past 50 years. Although research and development is underway to improve the accuracy of trajectory predictions to prevent damage, accurate predictions are known to be difficult because even slight changes in atmospheric conditions can change storm paths.

The Weather Lab, launched by Google DeepMind and Google Research, is equipped with the latest experimental AI-based tropical cyclone model based on the latest models of probabilistic neural networks, and can predict 50 scenarios for typhoon formation, trajectory, intensity, size, and shape up to 15 days in advance.

Internal testing has shown that WeatherLab's hurricane path and intensity predictions are as accurate or better than current physics-based methods.

Below is an animation showing the Weather Lab model's predicted path (blue line) and the actual trajectory (black line) of the cyclone. The model was able to accurately predict the paths of cyclones 'Honde' and 'Garance' that occurred south of Madagascar (bottom left of the image). The model also predicted the path of the cyclone that will occur in the Indian Ocean in the next few days (right side of the image).

It correctly predicted that Cyclone Alfred , which formed in Australia, would rapidly weaken into a tropical storm and potentially make landfall near Brisbane.

The UK Met Office, the University of Tokyo, Weathernews and others are also cooperating in improving the model.
