It has become clear that the number of community note posts on X has halved in just a few months

Twitter (formerly Twitter) has a Community Notes feature that allows users to add background information to posts that may be misleading. An investigation by NBC News in the United States revealed that the number of Community Notes posts fell by about half between January and May 2025.

Community Notes is a system where posts with suspicious content are fact-checked by users, rather than by the platform's content moderators. Community Notes written by some users are rated by other users, and Community Notes that have been rated as useful by the majority are displayed preferentially.
A 2024 study reported that 97% of community notes on posts about COVID-19 vaccines on X were accurate, and roughly half cited high-quality sources such as scientific papers.

Keith Coleman, vice president of X, explained on the podcast that when a Community Note appears alongside a post, it helps to deter the spread of certain types of misinformation. 'When a piece of content goes viral and a Community Note appears, we see a 50-60% drop in repost rates. Buzz goes down very quickly to zero,' Coleman said.
However, according to an analysis of X data by NBC News, the number of community note posts on X has been declining sharply. In January 2025, the number of community notes created by users reached nearly 120,000 per month, but the number of monthly community note posts has been declining since then, falling below 60,000 in May. During the same period, X's overall traffic fell from 4.7 billion PV per month to 4.4 billion PV per month, but the rate of decline in the number of community note posts was even higher.
The graph below shows the number of posts on Community Notes, including Birdwatch , the predecessor of Community Notes, which was introduced when X was still called Twitter. At the end of 2022, Community Notes became available in many countries, including Japan , and with the promotion of X's owner Elon Musk, awareness increased and the number of posts increased. In 2024, the number of posts remained at a fairly high level, but in 2025, we can see that the number of posts dropped sharply.
Regarding the decrease in the number of Community Note posts, an X spokesperson claimed that the number of Community Note posts was particularly high in 2024 because major elections, including the US presidential election, were held around the world, and that the decrease in the number of Community Note posts in 2025 was a natural fluctuation based on the world situation.
X is also adjusting its algorithms to reduce the need for community notes in the first place. A spokesperson told NBC News, 'If users see fewer posts that would benefit from using community notes, they will naturally be less motivated to write or request others to write them.'
But the decline of Community Notes on X could draw backlash from European regulators who are pushing social media companies to prevent the spread of misinformation. 'In Europe, having Community Notes working isn't just an option. It's a compliance issue,' said Matt Navarra, a British social media consultant.
According to NBC News, X only displays a small percentage of the community notes created, which may also be a factor in the decline in the number of community notes posted. Navarra said, 'When users can no longer see their community notes, they no longer believe that the system is working, and at that point trust is lost. So, volume certainly matters. The more community notes that are written and displayed, the greater the coverage for viral posts, misleading content, and general misinformation.'
X has also begun testing a new feature that will allow users to rate community notes in more detail.

'The world often feels divided, but Community Notes shows that people can agree on even conflicting topics. This experimental new feature aims to unearth ideas, insights, and opinions that connect different perspectives,' X said in a post about the new feature.
Community Notes show when they're found helpful by people who normally disagree. What if we could do the same for posts, recognizing posts that are liked by people who normally disagree?
