YouTube judges review of 4K video played on Raspberry Pi 5 using LibreELEC as 'harmful or dangerous content'

Jeff Gehring, the creator and YouTuber who published the video, revealed that YouTube had sent a warning to a video he was watching, citing 'harmful or dangerous content,' for violating the Community Guidelines. The video shows a 4K video being played on a Raspberry Pi 5 running LibreELEC, a Linux distribution specialized for media players.

The video that Gehring released is titled 'I replaced my Apple TV—with a Raspberry Pi.' As the title suggests, the video uses a Raspberry Pi to demonstrate how to use open source software to create an environment where you can freely watch videos on your NAS as if you were hosting your own Apple TV.

Gehring published the video on May 31, 2024, and more than a year after it was published, on June 5, 2025, YouTube sent a warning to him for violating its guidelines and removed the video. YouTube's claim was that the video contained ' harmful or dangerous content ,' and Gehring immediately appealed, but his appeal was rejected.

'So it's inconvenient for YouTube to have videos that allow you to watch self-hosted videos on LibreELEC?' asked Goering, but since YouTube will delete your channel for violating its guidelines twice, Goering chose to take 'policy training' to get his channel deleted.

It is unclear what decision YouTube made after that, but the video was restored. In the end, the video was offline for about 26 hours, and Gehring said he 'lost about $6 (about 870 yen).'

It was unclear how and which parts of the video violated the guidelines, and how they should have responded. Gehring said, 'I wish I didn't have to be abusive on social media to get the video back. As far as I know, there was no other way to draw attention to it.'
