An enhanced DM version 'XChat' is planned to be added to X (formerly Twitter), with features such as video calling and read/unread functionality. Elon Musk claims that it 'implements Bitcoin-style encryption functionality,' but is met with criticism.

On June 2, 2025, Elon Musk announced that X will have a new messaging feature called ' XChat .' XChat will have features such as voice calling, video calling, file sending, and read cancellation, and is scheduled to be released in the first week of June 2025 if there are no problems.

Below is the post announcing the release of XChat by Mr. Musk. XChat will be equipped with 'encryption function,' 'message deletion function,' 'file sending function,' 'voice call function,' and 'video' call functions. XChat is also developed in Rust , and is touted to have 'Bitcoin-style encryption function.'
All new XChat is rolling out with encryption, vanishing messages and the ability to send any kind of file. Also, audio/video calling.

This is built on Rust with (Bitcoin style) encryption, whole new architecture.
Additionally, voice and video calling will be available without a phone number and 'can be used across all platforms without a phone number.'

XChat was released to a small number of users in advance, and P4mui , who actually used XChat, reported that it was equipped with 'end-to-end encryption,' 'file sending,' 'read cancellation,' 'message deletion function including not only yourself but also the recipient,' and 'automatic message deletion function.'
BREAKING: XChat is now rolling out in beta for a select few users

It will roll out to more users soon
As a reminder XChat is the new generation of DMs with new features including:

• Ability to send files
• Ability to unread!!!

Below is a screenshot of XChat posted by P4mui. The video call button and voice call button are displayed in the upper right corner of the screen, and at the bottom of the screen, from the left, there are a 'send image button,' a button to take and send a photo with the camera, a button to send a GIF image, and a button to send a file.
The screen displayed when you send a JSON file is as shown below. The file name and file size are displayed.

When deleting a message, you can choose to delete it from your chat screen only or from the screen of the recipient.

It seems that you can return a message that you have marked as read to its unread state by swiping right on it.

DogeDesigner also posted a screenshot of the time setting screen for the 'function to automatically delete messages a certain amount of time after they are read.'
Musk said XChat will be released 'this week (first week of June 2025) if there are no scaling issues.'

Musk described XChat’s encryption as “Bitcoin-style encryption,” but Bitcoin core developer Luke Dash Jr. responded to Musk’s post by pointing out that “Bitcoin does not use encryption.”
Bitcoin doesn't even use encryption.

Rust also woke up
Ian Miers , a cryptography researcher at the University of Maryland, College Park, said: 'Seriously, what is Bitcoin-style encryption? Bitcoin has a signature system but no encryption. It's like saying, 'NASA is flying rockets with hydrogen and oxygen, so we're going to fly rockets with water.''
Seriously, what is Bitcoin style encryption? Bitcoin primarily uses signatures, not encryption.

This is like saying, we decided to run our rocket on water, since NASA uses Hydrogen and Oxygen. https://t.co/dWZhV6H4Tk
