Automattic, the developer of WordPress, has announced that it will resume contributing to the WordPress project. Titled 'Return to Core,' Automattic said it had taken a moment to pause, regroup, rethink, and strategize its contributions to the WordPress project, and that it is now ready to fully return.
The company also goes on to say that users can expect to see more contributions from Automattic in the future across WordPress Core , the Gutenberg block editor, the Playground , Openverse , and across WordPress.org .
Regarding the return, Automattic said, 'This is an exciting moment for us as we continue our long-held mission to democratize publishing for anyone, anywhere.'
According to Automattic, during the pause in contributions, they were able to bring back to the project a lot of insight into how WordPress is used and how they can shape the future of the web together with their many passionate contributors. Automattic said, 'We already power 43% of the web. There is a lot we can achieve.'
TechCrunch, the news site that reported on the incident, commented, 'It's unclear what has changed.'
With the release of WordPress 6.8, Automattic revealed their intention to reduce the amount of time they provide to contribute to WordPress, and in a discussion with nearly 30 core committers, project leaders, and core members, they described 6.8 as the last major update until 2025.

TechCrunch reports that Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg posted to the company that he wants to release WordPress 6.9, which will include a 'redesigned admin screen' and 'something from the new AI team,' by the end of 2025. Based on this information, it seems likely that the idea that WordPress 6.8 will be the last major update of 2025 will be overturned.
Automattic is currently in a dispute with hosting service WP Engine over WordPress and is facing a class action lawsuit from WP Engine customers.
