Nike to increase prices on footwear, apparel amid tariffs

Nike has announced that it will raise the prices of some of its products and sell them directly on Amazon starting the fifth week of May 2025. This will be the first time in six years that Nike will sell its products directly on Amazon. Nike plans to raise the prices of its adult clothing and equipment by $2 to $10 (approximately 290 to 1,400 yen), but will not raise the prices of its children's products.

Nike explained the reason for the price increase, saying, 'We regularly evaluate our business and make price adjustments as part of our seasonal planning.' Products priced between $100 and $150 will be increased by $5, while products priced over $150 will be increased by up to $10. However, shoes priced under $100 will not be increased. Nike's popular shoe, the Air Force 1 (selling for $155, or about 22,200 yen in Japanese yen), will not be subject to the price increase.

It has been pointed out that the reciprocal tariffs are one of the reasons for the price increase, as Nike sources most of its shoes from China and Vietnam. In fact, the footwear industry has been hit particularly hard by the reciprocal tariffs introduced by President Trump.

Nike's rival, Puma, is reportedly reducing shipments of products from China to the US from early May 2025. Puma has also announced that it may raise prices of its products in the US due to the impact of the reciprocal tariffs.

Nike also announced that it would re-enter Amazon in an effort to take market share from competitors. At the time of writing, Nike products sold on Amazon were sold by independent sellers, not directly by Nike.

Nike ended direct sales on Amazon in 2019 in order to shift its focus to sales on its own web store. It was pointed out that one of the reasons for Nike's decision to end direct sales on Amazon was that Amazon was unable to eliminate the sale of counterfeit branded products by third parties .
