Seagate's CCO announces intention to release 'HDDs with a capacity of over 100TB' by 2030

BS Teh, chief commercial officer of storage maker Seagate, said in an interview with CNBC that the company aims to launch a 100TB+ HDD by 2030.

Seagate to triple hard drive capacity by 2030 to meet AI demand

'By 2030, we aim to launch a hard drive with roughly three times the capacity of Seagate's top-of-the-line hard drives,' Te told CNBC. The largest capacity hard drive Seagate is manufacturing at the time of writing is the enterprise hard drive 'Exos M,' which was released in January 2025 and has a capacity of 36TB. In other words, the capacity of the hard drives Seagate is developing will exceed 100TB.

'You might be thinking, 'Who needs that?' Well, there is plenty. I think the demand is definitely strong. This is a key driver for the industry to be able to provide the storage capacity that the market needs, because there is no other technology that can generate the storage capacity to meet the market growth,' said Teh.

CNBC points out that with the recent intensification of AI development, massive amounts of data are needed for AI training and to improve output quality, which is driving demand for large-capacity storage.

According to the International Energy Agency, ChatGPT consumes an average of 2.9 watt-hours of electricity per query, nearly 10 times the amount required for a typical Google search. This means that ChatGPT's use to power the 9 billion internet searches that are conducted daily would require approximately 10 additional terawatt-hours of electricity per year.

'We design the products themselves to consume less power per terabyte or to increase the density of the device itself,' Teh said. 'So when you consolidate that product into a data center, it takes up less space, less power, less everything, because you're using fewer drives to fill that capacity.'

Teh also emphasized that by supporting the manufacturing of HDDs itself with renewable energy, Seagate is working to solve the climate issues surrounding the energy needs of AI.
