Gates founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000 and has donated more than $100 billion to the foundation to date.

The articles of incorporation of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation included a clause stating that the foundation would end decades after the deaths of Bill and Melinda Gates, but Gates has accelerated this schedule and declared that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will close permanently on December 31, 2045. At the same time, he also announced that he would donate $200 billion (about 29 trillion yen), equivalent to his entire fortune, through the foundation over the 20 years leading up to 2045.

Below is a graph of Gates' own assets. As of 2025, Gates' assets are $108 billion (about 16 trillion yen), but he plans to donate in stages over the next 20 years, donating 99% of his assets by 2045.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has made significant contributions to polio eradication efforts, research into Alzheimer's disease, clean energy research, etc. Gates said, 'This announcement will not change my approach to my work,' and has set the following three main goals for the next 20 years.

Reduce preventable maternal and child deaths
In 1990, the number of deaths of children under the age of five was 12 million, but by 2019, this had fallen to 5 million. Gates aims to further reduce the number of children who die from preventable causes, and points out the importance of improving nutrition, developing vaccines, and developing a system to deliver vaccines to those who need them.

Raise the next generation of children in a world free of deadly infectious diseases
Gates believes that polio and dung worm disease can be eradicated in the next few years. He also says that malaria and measles can be eradicated by 2045. He also aims to establish a cure for AIDS and develop a new tuberculosis vaccine. Gates aims to reduce the cost of infectious disease vaccines and treatments and deliver them to Africa, South Asia, and the Global South, thereby correcting health disparities.

Lifting hundreds of millions of people out of poverty
Gates pointed out that 'education is important for people to maximize their potential, but progress in education has not been as dramatic as progress in health.' Gates has set 'improving education' as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's top priority in the United States, and is working to support the learning of children who face significant barriers, such as black and Latino children and low-income children. To improve education, Gates will focus on 'providing access to new AI tools that allow teachers to focus on what matters most in the classroom.'

In addition, to enable access to quality nutritional sources, the UN has also pledged to support the development of 'seeds that can produce more crops even in harsh environments,' as well as 'support digital public infrastructure,' 'support financial and social services to promote inclusive economies and competitive markets,' 'support the use of AI to accelerate improvements in the quality of medical, educational, and agricultural services,' and 'support gender equality.'

'Today's announcement marks the beginning of the final chapter of my career. I've come a long way since I started a software company with a friend in middle school. It feels only fitting that I pledge to donate my assets through Microsoft to celebrate Microsoft's 50th anniversary,' Gates said. 'With the rise of AI, technology is advancing faster than ever. The world faces many challenges, but I'm optimistic that humanity can make progress.'
