Minecraft announced the discontinuation of VR and MR when it announced the 1.21.40 update in October 2024. The 1.21.40 update explained that 'We are ending support for VR/MR devices and will no longer support them after the March 2025 update. After the final update, you will be able to receive updates on your PC, continue creating in your world, and continue to use items purchased in the Marketplace on non-VR/MR graphics devices. However, a future update will end support for VR/MR devices, and you will no longer be able to use VR/MR devices with Minecraft.'
On May 6, 2025, two months later than the schedule announced in 1.21.40, Minecraft released the Minecraft Bedrock Edition 1.21.80 update. The 1.21.80 update includes new presets for creating Minecraft worlds, experimental items and objects, and other bug and glitch fixes.
Additionally, the 'Gameplay' section of the update information states that 'Access to Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality (MR) gameplay has been removed.'
When Minecraft officially released its VR version in 2016, Minecraft-vr.com, which had been providing unofficial VR mods, was asked not to use the name Minecraft and renamed it Vivecraft . According to PCWorld, Vivecraft will continue to be a way to play Minecraft on Meta Quest and Steam VR-compatible headsets.
