NVIDIA strongly opposes the AI company's claim that China is smuggling GPUs and CPUs by carrying them in fake pregnant women or by hiding them in live lobsters, calling it a fabrication, but both are true

Anthropic, an AI company known for developing chat AI 'Claude' and other apps, stated on its official website that 'China is smuggling CPUs and GPUs by having them carried by fake pregnant women or by hiding them in live lobsters.' NVIDIA has raised a voice of opposition after the company stated that 'China is smuggling CPUs and GPUs by having them carried by fake pregnant women or by hiding them in live lobsters.' However, both of Anthropic's claims have been confirmed to be true.

Anthropic released a statement on April 30, 2025 outlining its position on the U.S. government's AI proliferation regulations . In the statement, Anthropic noted that 'China has established a smuggling system for high-performance semiconductors.' In addition, as an example of smuggling, it said, 'China is evading export controls using creative methods such as hiding CPUs in fake pregnant women's bellies and packing GPUs with live lobsters.'

On the other hand, an NVIDIA spokesperson responded to an interview with CNBC on May 1, 2025, saying, 'American companies should focus on innovation and addressing the challenges, rather than telling ridiculous stories about big, heavy, and sensitive electronics being smuggled in 'fake pregnant women' and 'live lobsters.'' He dismissed Anthropic's claims as mere fabrications.

However, Anthropic's statement is not a fabrication, but is based on facts released by Chinese authorities. The case of 'attempting to smuggle a CPU by hiding it in a fake pregnant woman's stomach' occurred on the border between Macau and Zhuhai, Guangdong Province on November 25, 2022, and a video posted on the Chinese social media site 'Weibo' recorded the entire incident up to its discovery.

A woman travelling from Macau to mainland China is concerned about her bulging belly.

The woman who responded to staff's call said she was '5-6 months pregnant.'

However, the bulge in her belly was not due to pregnancy, but to a silicone cover stuffed with a large amount of items.

Packed inside the silicone cover were 202 CPUs and nine smartphones.

In addition, a case of smuggling a GPU into a live lobster

occurred in Hong Kong on April 28, 2023. The private car used for smuggling is shown below. A large amount of luggage is packed inside the car.

Approximately 280kg of live lobster was found inside the vehicle.

In addition, about 70 graphics boards were also being transported.

An NVIDIA spokesperson said, 'China is home to half of the world's AI researchers and has some of the most talented experts on all things AI. The U.S. cannot manipulate regulators to win on AI,' criticizing the policy to restrict exports of high-performance semiconductors to China.
