Amazon had planned to include the tariff increase in the price of the item, but bowed to pressure and backed out.

President Donald Trump's tariff policies are expected to drive up prices in the U.S., making life even harder for consumers who have already struggled with inflation. In the midst of this, rumors circulated that Amazon was considering including the impact of tariffs on the prices of certain products, but the White House warned against the move, and Amazon immediately issued a statement announcing that it was abandoning the plan.

Punchbowl News, an emerging news media specializing in news about the U.S. Congress, reported on April 29, 2025, citing a person familiar with Amazon's plans, 'Amazon plans to display the percentage of the total price that tariffs will make up next to the price of the product.'
On the same day, when Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was asked about the report at a White House press conference, Press Secretary Caroline Levitt responded, 'This is a hostile and political act by Amazon. The Biden administration has raised inflation to its highest level in the past 40 years, so why didn't Amazon do the same? As Reuters recently reported, Amazon works with Chinese propaganda agencies, so it's no surprise,' expressing her displeasure. The Reuters report that Levitt referred to was an article from 2021.

President Trump reportedly made a private call to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to express his frustration over reports that Amazon would be disclosing the cost of tariffs on its website.
Less than two hours after the press conference, Amazon acknowledged that it had considered including the tariff surcharge on its products, but said it would not go ahead with the plan.
'The team that runs our ultra-low-cost Amazon Haul stores has explored the idea of showing import taxes on certain products, but this has never been approved and will not happen,' Amazon spokesman Tim Doyle said in a media statement.

60% of Amazon's sales come from small, independent retailers that are highly dependent on imports, so the move to impose a huge 145% tariff on Chinese imports is expected to deal a major blow to Amazon.
According to a study by e-commerce software company SmartScout, the prices of 900 items on Amazon have increased by an average of 29% since April 9, 2025, and about 25% of the price increases were due to China-based sellers.
When asked by a reporter at the press conference, 'Do you agree that Amazon's move makes it very clear that it is American consumers, not China, that will pay the price for tariffs?' Levitt declined to answer directly, saying, 'I just spoke with the president on the phone about Amazon's announcement.'
