According to two witnesses and three sources familiar with the matter who spoke to Axios, the clash between Musk and Bessent, in front of President Trump and other senior administration officials, stemmed from a dispute over personnel changes at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
'Two middle-aged billionaire men were causing a ruckus in a hallway in the West Wing of the White House that resembled a
The argument between the two began in the Oval Office and escalated into a violent confrontation outside the room, with aides literally having to physically step in to separate the pair.
'There was no violence in the Oval Office, but the president witnessed it,' a witness said. 'They then went out into the hallway and started doing it again. It was chaos, it was really loud.'

The New York Times reported on April 18 that the two men had previously been at odds, particularly over personnel matters at the IRS. However, there had been no reports of a violent altercation involving the two men.
The day before the clash, former IRS employee Gary Shapley was appointed acting IRS commissioner at Musk's recommendation, but Bessent said he wanted to hand the job over to Deputy Commissioner Michael Vogt.
Shapley served as an investigator into suspected tax evasion against Hunter Biden, the second son of former President Joe Biden, and was appointed acting IRS commissioner for his work. However, he was dismissed just a few days later over the opposition of Bessent, suggesting that there is some animosity between the two men.
Then, on April 17, during a meeting at the White House, Bessent and Musk began arguing, and sources said 'F-bombs' began flying.
Bessent criticized Musk for 'overpromising and underdelivering' on the budget cuts at DOGE. Musk responded by calling Bessent a 'Soros stooge who runs a failed hedge fund.' The exchange of verbal abuse gradually escalated, with Bessent yelling 'Fuck you!' to which Musk responded, 'Say it louder.'

Axios noted that 'Part of the tension between Musk and Bessendt stems from their different personalities: Musk is an unconventional, fast-moving business leader and social media celebrity; Bessendt is an intelligent, quiet financial guru who is better at explaining financial markets than making the news.'
A Bessent supporter also told Axios, 'A lot of people are surprised because Scott is a very gentle person, but I think he has his limits and he can yell at times.'
When asked about the altercation, White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt did not deny the clash between the two, saying, 'It's no secret that President Trump has assembled a team of people who are incredibly passionate about our country's issues, and it's natural that differences of opinion will arise in any healthy policy process.'
With Musk and Bessent apparently unwilling to reconcile, White House officials are anxious to see who will come forward next. 'Scott won this round, but they don't want to make an enemy of someone like Musk,' a source told Axios.
