NATO contracts with big data analytics firm to equip member states with AI-based military systems

The NATO Information and Communications Systems Agency (NCIA) , which provides information and communications systems for NATO operations and exercises, announced a contract agreement with Palantir Technologies , a US big data analytics company, in a news release on April 14, 2025. The contract will deploy AI-based military systems in NATO member states, and aims to accelerate information integration and targeting, battlespace awareness and planning, and decision-making through a wide range of AI, from large-scale language models to generative AI and machine learning.

On March 25, 2025, NCIA made the final decision to acquire the AI system 'Maven Smart System NATO (MSS NATO)' provided by Palantir. MSS is an AI-based battlefield situational awareness platform that aggregates data from various sources and presents operations. It has already been introduced by the US military.
MSS NATO aims to enable commanders and warfighters to safely and securely leverage the latest AI in core military operations, providing the NATO alliance with a common data-based combat capability. 'We are proud to support NATO's efforts to strengthen deterrence by deploying an AI-enabled combat platform at the Supreme Allied Command Europe,' said Sean Manasco, senior counselor at Palantir. 'This partnership reaffirms NATO's determination to lead without fear of technological innovation.' In fact, the combat system Palantir created is also seen as giving Ukraine an advantage in the war against Russia.

General Markus Laubenthal, Chief of Staff of SHE Europe, said of the contract: 'NATO is at the forefront of adopting technologies that will make it more agile, adaptable and responsive to new threats. Innovation is at the core of NATO's warfighting capabilities. The MSS NATO will enable the Alliance to harness complex data and speed up decision-making, thereby adding real operational value.'
In addition, the contract agreement between NATO and Palantir took only six months from the outline of requirements to acquiring the system, making it the fastest in NATO history. As a result, Palantir's stock price rose about 8% on the morning of the announcement and settled at 4.6% in the afternoon, but it became one of the most watched stocks in 2025 despite the overall slump in the AI market. On the other hand, Investor's Business Daily, an economic media outlet, points out that there may be significant changes in the future, given the Department of Defense budget cuts under the administration of President Donald Trump and the impact on contracts for the US military, which also uses MSS like NATO.
