China's proprietary standard 'GPMI' replaces HDMI and DisplayPort, capable of up to 192 Gbps bandwidth and 480 W power supply

The Shenzhen 8K and UHD Video Industry Association, a group of more than 50 Chinese companies, has announced a new wired media communications standard called General Purpose Media Interface (GPMI), which will support 8K, with a maximum bandwidth of 192Gbps and a maximum power supply of 480W.

Compared to existing interface technologies, GPMI has seven advantages: bidirectional multi-stream, bidirectional control, high power supply, compatibility, high-speed transmission, fast startup, and full-chain security.

- Bidirectional multi-stream: Supports video and data input and output
- Bidirectional control: Control signals can be transmitted in both directions between devices
-High power supply: Supports up to 480W
- Compatibility: Fully compliant with USB interface standards
- High-speed transmission: Supports up to 192 Gbps
- Fast startup: Reduced to one-fourth of the current speed
- Full chain security: Supports 'ADCP' content protection protocol (may be a typo for HDCP)

There are two types, 'GPMI Type-C' and 'GPMI Type-B', and GPMI Type-C is compatible with the existing USB Type-C interface. It has also been approved by the USB-IF.

The GPMI Type-B connector appears to have a completely new shape.

We have listed other standards that can transmit video and the performance of GPMI.

standard Bandwidth Power Supply
HDMI 2.1 TMDS 18Gbps Not supported
HDMI 2.1 FRL 48Gbps Not supported
Thunderbolt 4 40Gbps 100W
USB4 40Gbps 240W
DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR20 80Gbps 240W
GPMI Type-C 96Gbps 240W
GPMI Type-B 192Gbps 480W

The Shenzhen 8K & UHD Video Industry Association said, 'GPMI integrates four functions - audio, video, data, control and power - into a single interface, reducing the number of cables and supporting 8K video transmission. In addition, daisy chain technology (which allows devices to be daisy-chained together) enables serial connection of multiple devices, reducing the installation costs of speakers, game consoles, monitors, etc., while also achieving low latency and high image quality.'

Members of the GPMI standardization group include major companies such as TCL, Hisense, Huawei, SHARP, and Haier, and it is possible that these companies will adopt this standard in the future.

The Shenzhen 8K & UHD Video Industry Association said, '4K resolution has become the standard configuration in both the global and domestic markets, but existing interface technologies have limited functionality, making it difficult for business expansion and difficult to adapt to the future needs of the industry. Faced with these challenges, the market urgently needs new interface technologies. Against this background, after years of technological innovation and industrial cooperation, GPMI was born.'
