The video below was taken in Antalya, Turkey, and shows Pikachu running among protesters, wiggling his legs and running at a speed that's hard to believe considering he's wearing a full-body costume.

According to foreign media 404 Media, the video was shot by photojournalist Ismail Koceloglu of Akdeniz University in Antalya on March 27, 2025.

In Turkey, large-scale protests have been taking place against the arrest of Ekrem Imamoglu, a political rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and mayor of the country's largest city, Istanbul, on March 19, 2025, on corruption charges, with 1,900 demonstrators detained so far.

The video of Pikachu's quick escape quickly spread across social media and became a hot topic. The main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), to which Imam-o-lu belongs, also responded, posting a message saying, 'Pikachu won't give in to tear gas!' along with the hashtag ' #DirenPikachu (Go Pikachu).'

It was later revealed that the person wearing the Pikachu costume was Hasan Tashkan, a student at a local university. It was a tremendous escape, and Tashkan, who is active in sports, shows off his muscular body on Instagram.

According to an interview with German media Der Spiegel, Tashkan initially planned to watch the demonstration from afar, but as the protests entered their eighth day, Tashkan felt tensions building and decided to disguise himself as Pikachu and join the demonstration to ease the tension.

'I was thinking of an idea to entertain everyone a little and calm my friends down, so I decided to dress up and walk through the crowds in Antalya,' Tashkan said. He also said that he chose Pikachu because 'Pikachu is very cute, popular, and in some ways the most relatable character.'

Tashkan's plan to capitalize on Pikachu's appeal was a huge success, and the Pikachu became a symbol of resistance, and Tashkan, who wore the costume, became extremely popular. Tashkan's Instagram account contains several videos of Pikachu happily marching around town and posing for photos.

While the show has received positive reviews online, it has not been well-received by the local media, with a pro-government Turkish broadcaster accusing Tashkan of using Pikachu as a tool in psychological warfare to make protests more attractive. The show emphasized that Pikachu attacks its enemies with electricity.

Tashkan, who has become the center of attention for better or worse, has been in hiding to avoid the backlash and has not been able to return home for several days.

'I want a Turkey where all young people can live happily and where everyone can express their opinions freely, because I love this country more than anything,' Tashkan told Der Spiegel.
