Google's AI model 'Gemini 2.0 Flash' is said to be able to remove watermarks from images using its image generation function

Gemini 2.0 Flash , a Google AI model released to the public in February 2025, introduced an image generation function for developers on a trial basis on March 12. It has become clear that this function can be used to remove watermarks from images distributed by photo stock services, which has raised concerns.

Gemini 2.0 Flash's image generation function allows you to generate and edit image content natively. For example, you can change the color of the sofa fabric or the design of the shelves or kitchen just by entering text.

Furthermore, by simply inputting an image and saying, 'Put this outfit on,' you can dress the model in the base photo in the clothes from the input photo.

Gemini 2.0 Flash has been a hot topic due to its extremely powerful image generation capabilities, but it has now been revealed that it can also remove watermarks from images, which has caused a stir on social media.

Deedy , who has been involved in the founding of search services such as Google Search and Glean , points out that 'Gemini 2.0 Flash is very good at removing watermarks in images.' A large amount of watermarks have been neatly removed.

Gemini 2.0 Flash not only removes watermarks, but also fills in the gaps created by removing the watermark. Other AI tools can also remove watermarks, but Gemini 2.0 Flash is very good at filling in the gaps.

Gemini 2.0 Flash's image generation function is currently 'experimental' and 'not available for production use,' and can only be used with Google's developer tools such as AI Studio. However, this model cannot completely remove watermarks. Gemini 2.0 Flash does not support semi-transparent watermarks or watermarks that cover most of the image.

Models like Anthropic's Claude 3.7 Sonnet and OpenAI's GPT-4o have explicitly refused to remove the watermark, which Anthropic has cited as 'unethical and potentially illegal.'

Please note that, with some exceptions , removing a watermark without the owner's consent is considered illegal under US copyright law.

In a Reddit thread that posted that Gemini 2.0 Flash's image generation function excels at removing watermarks, comments such as 'Gemini will be significantly nerfed to avoid lawsuits ' and 'AI can do in just a few seconds what a human would do in an hour with the clone tool in Photoshop ' were posted.
