Wyn-Williams was originally a New Zealand diplomat, but joined Meta (then Facebook) in 2011. As a public policy officer, a position that was still limited, he was a manager of a wide range of areas directly under the vice president, and was one of the executives who had direct contact with CEO Mark Zuckerberg and then-COO Sheryl Sandberg.

In the book, Wynne-Williams claims she was sexually harassed by her then-boss, Joel Kaplan, vice president of global public policy, and faced retaliation when she reported the allegations to the company. Kaplan has since been promoted to global chief executive.

Wynne-Williams also argues that throughout Facebook's history, the company has focused on growing in markets, including China, and ignored internal warnings that the company could be damaging to human rights and democracy. In an interview with NBC News, she said the book is being published because 'Meta is repeating the same mistakes.'

Wynne-Williams also claims that she filed a whistleblower complaint with the Securities and Exchange Commission in 2024 about Meta misleading investors. Although NBC confirmed this, the Securities and Exchange Commission said it would not comment on potential investigations, so the veracity of the allegations is unclear.

In response to Wynne-Williams' move, Meta spokesman Andy Stone said, 'As a result of Meta's lawsuit against Wynne-Williams, the arbitrator has determined that Wynne-Williams must stop slandering Meta and cease further promotion and publication of the book to the extent that is within his control.' Meta also said, 'Wynne-Williams is an anti-Facebook activist.'

In addition, news site The Verge points out that it is unclear whether the arbitrator has the authority to stop publication.
