Research shows that men who get angry easily are more likely to be seen as stupid by their female partners

A study published in the open-access, peer-reviewed journal Evolutionary Psychology found that men who get angry easily are more likely to be perceived as less intelligent by their female partners and that both parties experience lower relationship satisfaction.

Evolutionary psychology has shown that people look for factors such as 'competence' and 'compassion' in their partners. In modern society, intelligence is recognized as an ability, and compassion is judged by factors such as kindness and lack of anger.
However, it was unclear how these traits affected people who were already in romantic relationships, so the Polish research team investigated how perceptions of a partner's competence and consideration were related to relationship satisfaction and stability.

The study recruited 148 heterosexual couples of various ages. The women's ages ranged from 18 to 74, with an average age of 28, and the men's ages ranged from 18 to 80, with an average age of 29. To ensure that each partner did not influence the other, face-to-face sessions of about 45 minutes were conducted separately, and various data was collected through questionnaires and tests.
The subjects' anger traits, or how easily they get angry, were measured using a standardized questionnaire called
Analysis of the data showed a negative correlation between men's anger and relationship satisfaction: Men who reported higher levels of anger were more likely to report being dissatisfied in their relationships, and the women in their relationships were also more likely to be dissatisfied.
Furthermore, a negative correlation was found between 'men's anger' and 'women's intelligence as perceived by women.' In other words, men who get angry easily are more likely to be rated as less intelligent by their female partners. This relationship was found regardless of the men's objective intelligence scores, so the possibility that men who get angry easily are less intelligent is ruled out. This result suggests that impulsivity and emotional regulation problems associated with anger probably lower the intelligence perceived by partners.

To examine whether the association between men's anger and lower relationship satisfaction could be explained by women's perceptions of their partners' intelligence, the research team used a technique called mediation analysis.
The results showed that men's anger was associated with lower intelligence perceived by their partners, and that this lower intelligence perceived by women was associated with lower relationship satisfaction for both men and women. In other words, it is highly likely that 'men who get angry easily are more likely to be perceived as less intelligent by their female partners, which leads to lower relationship satisfaction.'
PsyPost, a psychology media outlet, said, 'This study supports the idea that there is a perceived trade-off between competence (intelligence) and compassion (low anger) in relationships. Perceiving your partner as less compassionate (easier to anger) appears to negatively affect your perception of your partner's competence, even if their actual competence is high.'
