The Danish post office has been responsible for delivering letters in the country since the service began in 1624. However, in recent years, digitalization has progressed rapidly and the number of letters delivered has been decreasing year by year. Below is the number of letters handled by PostNord Denmark, and it has been reported that the volume decreased by about 90% from 2000 to 2024.

'To create a sustainable business, we need to adapt to the times. Unfortunately, this means the difficult decision to say goodbye to some colleagues,' PostNord Denmark CEO Kim Pedersen said, announcing the layoffs of 1,500 employees and the removal of 1,500 postboxes.

In addition, PostNord Denmark has announced that it will end its letter delivery business on December 30, 2025. As a result, if you need to deliver a letter, business letter, direct mail, etc., you must post it by December 18, 2025. In addition, the deadline for accepting express mail, registered mail, and mail with return receipt is December 29, 2025.

In Denmark, the movement towards market liberalization is progressing, and in 2024, companies other than PostNord Denmark will be able to undertake letter delivery business. Therefore, from January 1, 2026, companies other than PostNord Denmark will be handling letter delivery. DAO, which won the public service mail delivery contract in 2024, said, 'Following the end of PostNord Denmark's letter delivery business, we are ready to strengthen our mail delivery service.'

'We have been in the postal business in Denmark for almost 400 years. It was a very difficult decision to put an end to that history,' said Pedersen. Meanwhile, PostNord Denmark said, 'Danes are enjoying online shopping more than ever before. This means there is a growing need for fast and good delivery of parcels in Denmark, and PostNord Denmark is well equipped to help with that. That's why we are focused on further growth in the area where the Danish people need us most - parcel delivery,' he said, with the goal of establishing itself as a parcel courier in the future.

Regarding international mail to Japan and other countries, PostNord Denmark said, 'We have been entrusted by the Ministry of Transport to handle international mail until December 31, 2025. After that, the Ministry of Transport will decide who will handle the work through bidding or other means.'
