Avride, headquartered in Austin, Texas, announced on March 5, 2025 that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Hyundai to jointly develop and operate vehicles capable of fully self-driving. The two companies will initially develop a fully autonomous vehicle based on Hyundai's EV, the Ioniq 5, and plan to operate it as an Uber vehicle in Dallas in the second half of 2025.

Avride, which aims to develop a commercial robot taxi service, has been conducting tests in Austin and Seoul, South Korea using vehicles such as Hyundai Sonata. With this announcement, Avride says it plans to significantly expand the number of autonomous vehicles it operates prior to commercial service.
'The partnership is focused on leveraging Hyundai's cutting-edge EV platform technology, the Ioniq 5, and Avride's autonomous driving technology to pave the way for future mobility solutions such as robotaxis and autonomous delivery services,' Avride said in a statement.
The Ioniq 5s that will be added to Avride's fleet will initially be assembled at Hyundai's EV production facility, Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) in Georgia, before being integrated into Avride's self-driving vehicles and deployed to Uber users in Dallas as part of Avride's robotaxi service.
'Hyundai is actively promoting our autonomous vehicle foundry business in pursuit of optimal and pioneering vehicles for Level 4 autonomous driving. We are also expanding our collaboration with leading autonomous technology companies such as Avride to foster an environment where their innovations can actively participate in our efforts to shape the future of mobility,' said Chang Seong, president and head of the Advanced Vehicle Platform (AVP) division at Hyundai.
This isn't the first time Hyundai's Ioniq 5 has been transformed into a self-driving vehicle: Waymo, a self-driving car developer under Google's parent company Alphabet, has also signed a deal with Hyundai to deploy the Ioniq 5 in its robotaxi network in 2024.
Uber also announced that it would partner with Motional, a joint venture between Hyundai and auto parts supplier Aptiv, to equip the Ioniq 5 with self-driving technology for its Uber Eats pilot program.
