Amazon Prime Video distributes a variety of movies and TV series produced in various countries, but some of them do not have a dubbed version and only have a subtitled version. In this case, those who prefer dubbed versions have no choice but to endure and watch the subtitled version or hope that a dubbed version will be released someday.

'To make its vast streaming library available to even more customers, Prime Video is now offering 'AI-assisted dubbing' for licensed movies and series that couldn't otherwise be dubbed,' Amazon said in a new blog post.

Starting March 5, AI-assisted dubbing will be available in English and Latin American Spanish for 12 licensed movies and series, including ' El Cid: La Leyenda ' and ' Mi Mamá Lora .' Amazon is calling the AI-assisted dubbing a 'pilot program,' which could lead to a larger scale rollout if the program is successful.

'Prime Video believes in enhancing our customers' experiences with practical and useful AI innovations. AI-assisted dubbing is only available for titles that don't support dubbing. We want to explore new ways to make series and movies more accessible and enjoyable , ' said Raf Soltanovich, vice president of technology, Amazon Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios.

The AI-assisted dubbing pilot program is a hybrid approach to dubbing, where localization experts work with AI to control quality. Amazon says, 'This AI-assisted process incorporates just the right amount of human expertise, enabling localization of titles that would otherwise be inaccessible to customers.'

Engadget acknowledged that with the ever-increasing number of movies and series available on streaming sites, subtitling and dubbing has become big business, so it makes sense to streamline the process to make content more accessible. However, it noted that professional voice actors generally dub movies and TV series, and that even with the progress of AI, there are still concerns about quality.

In February 2025, the new dubbed version of 'Back to the Future' was broadcast, in which Mamoru Miyano played the role of Marty and Koichi Yamadera played the role of Doc, and attracted a lot of attention. On Amazon, you can rent the dubbed version in which Koichi Yamadera plays the role of Marty and Takeshi Aono plays the role of Doc.
