The cry of Apple users' souls: 'I want existing features improved rather than new features added'

Apple is trying to improve user convenience by introducing features such as 'Apple Intelligence' one after another. However, Apple product enthusiasts say that there are many areas that need improvement before these new features can be implemented.

Apple's Software Quality Crisis: When Premium Hardware Meets Subpar Software - Eliseo Martelli

Eliseo Martelli, a longtime Apple user, said that while he appreciates the 'seamless integration of hardware and software that is a hallmark of the Apple ecosystem,' he began to question Apple's stance on its products after experiencing problems with overheating and latency when using the 11-inch iPad Air (M2).

The problem he experienced was a glitch in an Apple app. When he was using the iPad's Notes and

Freeboard apps with his Apple Pencil Pro, he noticed a significant lag in the pen's operation and the app's operation, as well as frequent overheating of the device.

Concerned about possible damage to the device, Martelli took the iPad to an Apple Store, which offered to replace it, but after further investigation, the company concluded that it was likely a software issue rather than a hardware defect.

Martelli points out that the 11-inch iPad Air (M2) has the following problem. This problem has been occurring for some time since Martelli first experienced it, and it remains the same even with the latest iPadOS (18.3.1) at the time of writing.

-Heat management issues
The M2 chip is supposed to throttle performance before the external temperature exceeds its limit, but it doesn't, suggesting the thermal management system isn't working properly.

-Memory management issues
The gradual degradation in performance suggests that Apple's drawing application may have a memory leak or garbage collection is not working properly.

'What's particularly frustrating is that these issues aren't occurring in third-party apps that are pushing the limits of the hardware, but in Apple-made apps that, in theory, should be optimized for the hardware,' Martelli said.

Since Martelli made this issue public, similar issues have been reported one after another on

Hacker News and Reddit . Many similar issues have been reported in the past, so it is by no means an issue unique to Martelli.

'What concerns me most is that multiple updates have failed to address the underlying performance issues while introducing new features that put even more strain on the system,' Martelli said. 'For years, Apple enthusiasts have been happy to pay the 'Apple tax' and accept the premium price for Apple products, but if software quality continues to decline, this value will be called into question. As users and customers, we need to speak up and demand the quality-first Apple we once knew.'

In addition, since the problem has not been improved even with multiple updates, Martelli points out that Apple's product development team may be in the following state.

・Functionality takes priority over optimization
Development resources are focused on developing new features rather than fixing existing performance issues

Insufficient performance testing
Even Apple's own applications are not thoroughly tested in real-world usage scenarios.

In addition, they argue that customers who pay a premium for Apple products should receive the following benefits: awareness of known performance issues; updates that focus solely on performance and stability; and consideration of extended warranties when software issues affect the lifespan of the hardware.

Finally, Martelli said, 'I think Apple has lost sight of what once made their products special. I urge Apple to go back to its roots, which is to make products that prioritize user experience over new features.'
