The survey was conducted by Vox Media in partnership with research firm Two Cents Insights and surveyed more than 2,000 adults living in the US.

According to the press release, people are becoming increasingly wary of platforms, with 66% of people saying that 'the quality of information is declining and it is difficult to find reliable sources of information.'

Additionally, more than half (55%) of people said they get information from communities rather than search engines like Google, and 52% said they use other platforms, such as chatbots or TikTok, rather than Google.

In particular, 53% of Millennials (born after 1981 and who came of age or entered the workforce in the 2000s) and 61% of Gen Z (born between 1996 and 2012) said they would use AI tools rather than search engines such as Google when researching a particular topic.

In addition, 42% of people said that 'Google and search engines are becoming less useful.' Google search results seem to be particularly critical, with 76% of people saying that 'when I search on Google for shopping, a quarter of the results are sponsored ads or promotions,' and only 14% of people said that these sponsored ads and promotions were useful.

60% of people had a negative view of the current state of social media, with comments such as 'I feel like a number in a giant computing machine', 'It's a place for endless product placement ', 'A simulated world with ads', and 'It's like a data point waiting to be sold'.

By the way, according to search engine market share information from the data statistics service Statcounter, Google's share of the global search market has been over 90% since 2015, but in October 2024, it fell below 90% at 89.34% for the first time in a long time, and the latest data at the time of writing, for January 2025, is 89.78%.
