Monolith Productions revealed that it was working on a Wonder Woman game in 2021, but parent company Warner Bros. Games confirmed that the development project had been canceled. Warner Bros.' decision to close the three game studios comes after it announced that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, released in 2024, had posted a $200 million loss and that MultiVersus, also known as the Warner Bros. version of Smash Bros., would be shut down. Regarding Warner Bros. Games' poor performance, Bloomberg points out that 'part of the blame for the poor performance lies with inappropriate management and lack of guidance from upper management.'

When Kotaku, a game media outlet, contacted Warner Bros. Games, the company responded, 'Warner Bros. Games has had to make the very difficult decision to structure our development studios and investments to create the best possible games for our core franchises, including Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones. After careful consideration, we have decided to close three development studios: Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. Games' San Diego studio. This is a strategic change in direction and is not a reflection on these teams or the talent within them.' The fact of the studio closure was revealed in response.

In addition, 'Monolith Productions' game version of Wonder Woman will no longer be developed. We wanted to provide our players and fans with the highest quality experience for this iconic character, but unfortunately this is no longer possible with our strategic priorities. This is a tough decision, as Monolith Productions has a history of delivering great fan experiences through great games. We greatly admire the passion of our three teams and thank all our employees for their contributions. Although it is difficult, we are committed to once again producing high-quality games developed by world-class studios for our passionate fans and to returning our games business to a profitable and growing one in 2025 and beyond,' he said, promising to continue focusing on the games business.

According to a report from gaming media Polygon, employees were informed of the closure of the three studios by JB Perret, head of global streaming and gaming at Warner Bros. Perret said, 'We need to regain the trust and confidence that we can make great games,' and claimed that the financial difficulties are due to 'a lack of product-market fit and many of our new releases being truly disappointing.'

Warner Bros. Games' Montreal studio is reportedly working on a Game of Thrones game, while its Rocksteady studio is working on a new Batman game after the failure of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Longtime Warner Bros. Games head David Haddad recently announced he was leaving the company.
