Beavers build a dam that local authorities had been planning for seven years, saving them $1.9 million

The Brdy Mountains , located in southwestern Czech Republic in Central Europe, have been left untouched for a long time and have been designated as a landscape conservation area because of the untouched nature. There was a plan to build a dam to restore the wetlands in the Brdy Landscape Conservation Area, but it has been reported that the local authorities were able to save a lot of money thanks to the wild European beavers building the dam themselves.

The Brdy Mountains are a hilly region stretching for about 60 km southwest of Prague , the capital of the Czech Republic, and are one of the largest forested areas in the Czech Republic. A large area of the mountain was designated a military zone in 1925, shortly after the founding of Czechoslovakia , and it was used for military exercises for a long time afterwards, so no development took place.
As a result, the Burdi Mountains have remained untouched for a long time, and most of the military areas were replaced by protected landscape areas in 2016. At the time of writing, the protected landscape areas of the Burdi Mountains are areas where you can enjoy hiking and forest bathing.
A project to build a small dam in the protected landscape of the Burdi Mountains was proposed in 2018. The military, which previously administered the area, had built a bypass in the canyon to improve drainage, but the project aimed to restore the wetlands by blocking part of the bypass.
The project was awarded a budget of 30 million Czech crowns (approximately 190 million yen), and the authorities of the protected landscape zone had been negotiating with the authorities of the Vltava river basin for permission to build the dam. However, it turned out that wild beavers living in the protected landscape zone had built the dam without permission.

'The military forestry service and the Vltava basin authorities were negotiating with each other to set up the project and address issues regarding land ownership, but the beavers managed to beat them and save 30 million Czech crowns. The beavers built the dam for free without drawing up any project documentation,' said Bohumil Fišer, head of the Brdi Mountains Protected Landscape Management Agency.
'Beavers can build a dam in just one night, or at most two,' said zoologist Jiri Vlček. 'A human would have to get a building permit, have the plans approved and raise the funds.' He added that even once the excavators started work, it would take about a week to build the dam.
Jaroslav Obermajer of the Czech National Agency for Nature and Landscape Protection (AOPK), who visited the beaver-built dam, said the newly created wetlands and pools of water provide ideal habitats for rare crayfish, frogs and other plants and animals. 'Beavers always know the best places. The places where they build their dams are always just right,' he said.
According to AOPK spokesperson Karolína Šůlová, although beaver dams have certainly contributed to water retention in the region, sometimes they cause flooding and cause damage to humans. In fact, in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, Canada, underground cables were cut by beavers, causing an Internet outage.
