TikTok, banned in the US, to be reinstated thanks to President-elect Trump's efforts

TikTok, whose service and app distribution in the United States was suspended on Sunday, January 19, 2025, has announced that it is working to restore its service. According to a statement from TikTok, it will be able to revive the service thanks to the efforts of Donald Trump, who will be the next president of the United States.

On Friday, January 17, 2025, the US Supreme Court ruled that the 'TikTok Ban Act,' which would force TikTok to sell or withdraw from the US, is constitutional. As a result, the company has indicated its intention to shut down its service on Sunday, January 19 of the same year.

Trump, who is scheduled to become the 47th President of the United States at the inauguration ceremony to be held at 2:00 on January 21, 2025, declared on his social media account 'Truth Social' that 'I will issue an executive order immediately after taking office to extend the deadline for the sale of TikTok and allow for an agreement to be reached to protect national security.' He also stated, 'I will make it clear that I will not pursue any liability against any company that helped keep TikTok up and running before my order was issued.'

Trump added that 'TikTok could be a joint venture between the current owners and/or new owners, with the United States acquiring 50% ownership.'

TikTok's app distribution remains suspended on Apple's App Store and Google Play Store, and the app is not available at the time of writing. However, TikTok's hosting provider Oracle and its CDN partner Akamai are already working to restore TikTok's service, and are prepared to resume TikTok at any time if Trump issues an executive order, and TikTok's mobile app and web version have already been restored on the 19th.

The app displayed the following screen saying 'Welcome back!' and notifying users that service had been restored. The screen also said, 'Thanks to President Trump's efforts, TikTok is back in the United States.'

TikTok has also reportedly sent a message to advertisers saying, 'On January 20, we will resume running ad campaigns including U.S. users and serving ads to U.S. users, but live campaigns will be subject to certain limitations. We have strengthened our infrastructure to minimize disruptions, but we expect temporary service instability.'

TikTok CEO Shou Chiu posted a video in support of Trump, saying, 'We are grateful and pleased to have the support of the President, who truly understands our platform. The President has used TikTok to express his ideas and perspectives and connect with the world, generating more than 60 billion views of his content in the process.'

However, while Trump is trying to avoid banning TikTok, some federal lawmakers are pushing back. Republican Senators Tom Cotton and Pete Ricketts issued a joint statement on October 19th arguing that there is no legal basis to extend the effective date of the ban beyond January 19th. Senator Cotton further stated, 'Companies that cooperate with TikTok could be subject to hundreds of billions of dollars in fines. Think carefully.'

TikTok's service has only been partially restored, and it is not clear how other ByteDance-related apps, such as CapCut and Marvel Snap, will be affected.
