Tasting review of Sukiya's 'Mekabu Okra Beef Bowl', 'Plenty of Mekabu Beef Bowl', and 'Yamakake Mekabu Okra Beef Bowl' with Mekabu, Okra, and Yamakake

The ' Mekabu Okra Beef Bowl ,' a sticky texture that combines mekabu and okra, appeared at Sukiya on Tuesday, May 23, 2023. In addition, the ' Plenty of Mekabu Beef Bowl ' with a large amount of mekabu only and the ' Yamakake Mekabu Okra Beef Bowl ' with a sticky texture that adds mountain kake to mekabu and okra were also introduced, so I actually tried eating three types of sticky beef bowls to see how the sticky texture went with the beef bowl.

Arrived at Sukiya.

At the entrance to the store, there was a banner advertising the 'Mekabu Okra Beef Bowl.'

I bought 'Mekabu Okra Beef Bowl', 'Plenty of Mekabu Beef Bowl', and 'Yamakake Mekabu Okra Beef Bowl' and brought them home. All three types come with a small bag of bonito flakes, and the 'Yamakake Mekabu Okra Beef Bowl' also comes with a yam.

◆Mekabu and okra beef bowl
First, I'll try the 'Mekabu Okra Beef Bowl'.

When I opened the lid, the beef bowl was topped with okra and mekabu.
Add bonito flakes.

It looks like this when you add bonito flakes.

When you eat it, the sticky texture of the mekabu and okra fills your mouth. Because the beef bowl has a strong flavor, you can't really taste the mekabu and okra, but the stickiness of the ingredients gives them a strong presence.

◆Beef bowl with plenty of mekabu
Next, I will try the 'Plenty of Mekabu Beef Bowl'.

Instead of okra, the beef bowl was topped with two chunks of mekabu seaweed.

It contains twice as much mekabu as the 'Mekabu Okra Gyudon', but the stickiness is a little weaker than that of the 'Mekabu Okra Gyudon'. Also, like the 'Mekabu Okra Gyudon', the flavor of the mekabu is hidden in the taste of the beef bowl, so if you want to enjoy it as a 'sticky beef bowl', the 'Mekabu Okra Gyudon' with its stronger stickiness is recommended.

◆Yamakake Mekabu Okra Beef Bowl
Checking the label on the 'Yamakake Mekabu Okra Beef Bowl', it appears that the 'Yamakake Mekabu Okra Beef Bowl' is a 'Mekabu Okra Beef Bowl' with a Yamakake Set attached.

The Yamakake set included 'Tororo', 'Dashi soy sauce' and 'Wasabi'.

Squeeze the grated yam out of the bag.

The finished 'Yamakake Mekabu Okra Beef Bowl' looks like this. The meat is covered with three types of sticky ingredients: 'mekabu,' 'okra,' and 'tororo.'

When you eat it, the Yamakake has a texture that is both fluffy and sticky. Even when eaten with the beef bowl, the sweetness of the Yamakake itself does not disappear, but rather adds a sweet flavor to the beef bowl. The stickiness is the strongest of the three types, and you can enjoy the stickiness to the fullest from the first bite to the last.

In addition, the following dishes are also available for purchase individually: 'Plenty of Mekabu,' 'Mekabu Okra,' 'Katsuobushi Okra,' and 'Yamakake,' so you can enhance the stickiness or add more stickiness to your favorite beef bowl.

The regular-sized 'Mekabu Okra Beef Bowl' and 'Plenty of Mekabu Beef Bowl' are 580 yen (tax included), and the regular-sized 'Yamakake Mekabu Okra Beef Bowl' is 690 yen (tax included), and will be available at Sukiya from Tuesday, May 23, 2023.
