Children's education is an important issue not only for parents, but can also determine the future of the nation. While talent is often thought to be something people are born with, children's talents can be developed through education. Professor Kenneth Kiura , who teaches educational psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, introduces five methods for developing children's talents.

Some people may believe that talent is rare, but Dr. Benjamin Bloom, an American educational scholar famous for his six-stage model of thinking (PDF), has studied geniuses in six different fields and argues that almost everyone in the world can develop it with the right education. According to Dr. Bloom, five key elements are starting to develop talent at an early age, expert guidance, planned practice, an excellent practice environment, and the child's own enthusiasm.

◆1: Start working hard from a young age
To develop talent, you need to start anything from a young age. A study of 24 geniuses in various fields, such as chess and figure skating, found that 22 out of 24 had received special education between the ages of 2 and 5.

In some cases, parents who are experts themselves provide gifted education for their children. One example is Lauren Cook , a national volleyball player. From a young age, she was coached by her father, John Cook, who had experience coaching volleyball at national championships. Other parents, however, make an effort to provide gifted education for their children even if their children show an interest in a field completely unrelated to them. Adora Svitak 's parents were not writers, but they read to her for more than an hour every day as a child, which sparked her interest in reading.

Her parents encouraged her to write, helped her publish, and were always willing to help her in any way they could, and as a result, by the age of 11, Adora had published two books and given over 100 performances around the world.

◆2: Expert guidance
Some parents go to great lengths to ensure their children receive expert instruction. Chess grandmaster Cayden Troff learned to play chess at just 3 years old by watching his father and older brother play. His father read books, watched videos, and worked tirelessly to help Cayden improve at an incredible rate.

However, as his father gradually became too much of a match for Kayden, his father decided to have him take online chess lessons from a grandmaster. Kayden's parents worked more than 30 hours a month outside of their regular work hours as custodians , managing stocks and bonds on behalf of investors, to raise $300 a month for Kayden's tuition.

◆3: Planned practice
Geniuses always set goals when training and never slack off. Caroline Thiel, a US state swimmer, recalls how tough swimming practice is: 'People who don't know anything about swimming might think that practice is over after a few laps in the pool, but in reality, they keep swimming even though their body is in pain, out of breath, and nauseous, even though their mind is completely blank. They're exhausted, in pain all over, and it's hard to find motivation.'

◆4: Having an excellent practice environment
The parents of Jade Atkins, a US High School Rodeo champion, were horse trainers and had horses with excellent pedigrees and trailers that could transport horses to rodeo competitions. Jade 's home was an environment where she could develop her rodeo talent from birth.

However, it is rare for people to be born into a privileged environment, and if there is no excellent training environment nearby, they should go to a place that provides an excellent training environment, even if it means moving away from home. Jack Sock , who has won the Wimbledon Championship and the US Open, two of the four major tennis tournaments, traveled several hours each way on weekends to attend a specialized tennis school in a neighboring state where many talented children gathered. If parents help, talented children will gather in high-level environments as if they were being guided, and such schools will help develop their talents.

◆5: Children becoming absorbed in the activity
When the parents of a boy who was passionate about chess took the game away from him because he was doing poorly at school, the boy became so pitiful that it seemed as if his soul had been taken away. When asked why the boy had become so desperate, the parents said, 'There's no doubt about it, he really enjoys chess.' To develop talent, it's important for children to be passionate about it.

Regarding parents who are committed to developing their children's talents, Professor Kiura said, 'While many parents push their children to practice, the parents I studied understood that all they could do was support and encourage their children to pursue their passions. Only parents can spend hours driving their children to and from school and providing money for practice. And most importantly, these parents help because they love their children and want to help them achieve their dreams.'
