A 13-year-old male student was hospitalized after performing push-ups as punishment for running around the halls of his school, resulting in muscle damage.
He did three sets of 20 push-ups, with a break in between. He had the option of staying after school to study, but he chose to do push-ups instead. However, it seems that the exercise was too strenuous for him.
A 13-year-old boy hospitalized for a week after doing push-ups at school as a punishment
It has been reported that Donell Dixon (13), a male student at David Ellis School in Detroit, Michigan, USA, was injured while doing push-ups as punishment at school and was hospitalized for a week.
Dixon ran down the halls of the school and locked his locker without permission. As punishment, he was given the choice of doing push-ups or staying after school, and he chose to do push-ups.
Sylvia Green, a teacher at the school, said he was coached and required to do three sets of 20 push-ups, with breaks between sets for water.
After completing the punishment, Dixon's arm swelled to twice its normal size, and his mother rushed him to the hospital. He was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a condition caused by excessive strain. This disease is a general term for a variety of symptoms that occur when skeletal muscle degenerates or dies, causing components contained in muscle cells to leak into the bloodstream, and it also causes problems with urine production in the kidneys.
Donell Dixon was hospitalized after doing push-ups.

Dixon's mother has consulted with a lawyer about the incident, and school officials have expressed shock and hope that Dixon will make a full recovery.
While I don't think there's anything wrong with giving students a chance to reflect on their misbehavior, 60 push-ups may have been too strict a quota for Dixon...
